The Emmaus Diaries are a personal, reflective account of knowing, experiencing, and pursuing the resurrected and living Christ. They follow the theme surrounding the two disciples who travelled home with the stranger. Their account offers a backdrop to share insights into this life of knowing Jesus.
We hear of their encounters before His resurrection, peer into their personal history of observing and following Him in His earthly ministry, and experience the unfolding realisations and meanings of what He did and said during these different phases of His earthly and Heavenly life.
Historically, one of the two disciples is named in this account in Luke 24:18, Cleopas. However, with good academic support, I have chosen Mary as the second disciple, as the wife of Cleopas, in these discussions of their life with the Christ.
While on the road, as they walked and talked, how many things were revealed to these two disciples is unknown, but Scripture says, “Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures”. All Scripture is mentioned here, so it must have been quite a sighting! No wonder their hearts burned within them. Jesus also said in John 5:39, “It is these (the scriptures) that bear testimony of me”!
It is also clear from their discussion with Him on the road that both of them were intimately associated with what was a distinct first-hand knowledge and observance of Jesus’ ministry before His death. In Luke 24:21-24 they include themselves among the company of those closest to Jesus.
So, by the very nature of their proximity, no doubt these two disciples would have gained many insights into our Lord. Not only that, but they had the privilege bestowed upon them to be among those first ones to encounter the newly risen Christ!
I pray that as we walk and share these diary writings about the vast expanse of Christ, we are knit together as one in this glorious journey from Jerusalem to home and back again!
